Saddy and Bean
Finding Balance with the blues

I created Saddy and Bean in my early 20's. I was diagnosed with Lupus at age 11 and like many of us with Lupus, I struggled with navigating the ebbs and flows of depression. I knew it was a constant but decided that I would strive to experience everything with a light heart. My blues could follow me wherever I go but it would be on my path to always find love for the light. I needed a way to express this desire and thus Saddy was born.
Origins

From scratch
The first Saddy and Bean drawings were created with colored pencils on your average white sketch paper.

These two drawings were the first two Saddy and Bean drawings.
They are the only two depictions in which Bean was faceless and where the grandness of Saddy was affecting Bean in a destructive way.
Following the original two I decided to shift my direction with gentleness, care, and light.

Somewhere along the way a digital tablet made its way into my hands and most of my Saddy work is now finished on Procreate. However, 90% if the time the original ideas began as they started. A simple sketch on whatever paper is lying around.
Often times Bean is so tiny she is hard to see.
But she is always there with a smile

Saddy has only ever smiled once ....

A friend recommended I try using Toon Boom for animation. Of course I had to feature Saddy even when testing a new program.
....and only been featured without Bean once.

But now they're inseparable and on their way to their next adventure.
